Portrait in the School Library

John Nelthorpe

was educated in Brigg at "Mr Osgodby's School". He studied at Cambridge and became a lawyer in London.

He fought in the Civil War on the Parliamentary side. The portrait shows him in armour, with his officer's staff. In the background there is what appears to be a battle scene. Later, like many others, he supported King Charles II.

He was made a baronet shortly before his death in 1669. In his will he left money for the establishment of a grammar school in Brigg for boys from the town and certain other villages.

The family seat is still Scawby Hall, near Brigg. The Nelthorpe family and the Nelthorpe Foundation continue to support the School.
