Angel Suite, Brigg, 6th November 2008
John Osborne, who attended Sir John Nelthorpe School and Brigg Sixth Form College in the 90s, is giving a special reading in Brigg, North Lincolnshire as part of a new independent film.
John is a poet and writer who has recently completed his first book, Radio Head, to be published by Simon & Schuster in May 2009. He is currently working on his second book. He is a member of Aisle 16, the UK's most sought after poetry collective, who can regularly be seen performing at festivals such as Glastonbury, Latitude, Reading and Leeds.
The event is to be filmed as part of a new independent film, entitled LOCAL BOYS DONE GOOD. Five authors will return to their hometowns to perform specially written material about their town, including Swansea, Portishead, Quarley and Coltishall, Essex.
John will be joined in Brigg by the other four authors from the film, who will provide the support slots on the evening. They are novelist Joe Dunthorne (poet and author of the Penguin novel Submarine) Tim Clare (poet and presenter of Channel 4's How To Get A Book Deal), Chris Hicks (poet and Time Out Award winner) and Ross Sutherland (included in the Time's list of Top Ten Literary Stars of 2008).
John Osborne lived in Brigg until the age of 18 when he went to Norwich, to study German at the University of East Anglia. About returning to perform in Brigg, he writes:
Compiling the material for this event has been lots of fun. The title of the film is supposed to be tongue-in-cheek: we don't really feel we have achieved that much since leaving, and no-one is going to hoist the bunting for my ‘return’ to Brigg. My mum might make us a shepherd's pie though, which will be the main highlight. At this moment we don’t know what the final film will be about. All we know is that we want to ask the question “why do people leave their hometowns?” and then, a little later, “why do we return?".
The event at the Angel Suite begins at 7.30 pm and tickets are £3.00 on the door.
Graham (1971-78), also known as Nogsy, retired from the Lincolnshire Police in September 2008, after 30 years service as Constable in the Force. Now living at Snitterby, Graham would be glad to hear from any school friends.
